Former Australia opener and selector Mark Waugh has put forth his views on the current most debatable topic in the Australian cricket –Glenn Maxwell, saying that the National Selectors have made a mistake by not picking the explosive all-rounder for the Test series against Pakistan in UAE. 

However, Waugh said that it is not time to start panicking, as Australia’s trouble against spin bowling in Asian conditions continue, but doesn’t feel there is someone who can emerge as a savior for them against Pakistan here.  

At the moment, the Kangaroos are facing an uphill battle in the first Test of the two-match series without their batting powerhouses Steve Smith and David Warner, and Waugh believes that Maxwell is the man who could have made a difference and rescue them, unfortunately, he is not there.

Waugh further went on to claim that he would have chosen Maxwell for the ongoing Test series in the UAE, saying he is one of the best Australia batsmen against spin and has the ability to turn the match.

Waugh said on Fox Cricket on Wednesday (October 10), “It’s tough because we lost our two best batsmen (Steve Smith and David Warner), three including (Cameron) Bancroft. There’s only a certain pool of players that are good enough to play Test cricket.”

He signed off by saying, “It’s not the time to panic. I don’t think there’s many players there that would make a big difference. The only player I would have picked that is not there is Glenn Maxwell. He’s a guy with ability, can change the game, he’s a good player of spin, he can actually take the attack to the bowling side. That’s the only guy I would have in there that is not there, and maybe you can bring Matt Renshaw back for the second Test. That’s about the best we’ve got at the moment.”
