Angelo Mathews and Kusal Mendis' unbeaten 274* runs partnership and fifth-day rain helped Sri Lanka to draw the first of two Tests against New Zealand.

New Zealand asked Sri Lanka to bat first and they started off poorly and lost three wickets for just nine runs but Karunaratene, Mathews and Dickwella's fifties helped to post a respectable total of 282 runs.

In reply, New Zealand scored 578 runs with the help of Tom Latham's 264*. Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor and Henry Nicholls also scored fifties. In the second innings also Sri Lanka had a poor start and lost three wickets for just thirteen runs but Kusal Mendis and Angelo Mathews' unbeaten hundreds and rain on fifth day helped the visitors to draw the game. Tom Latham was named Man of the Match for his 264* runs knock.
