Tim Southee (5/61) and Trent Boult (4/39) wreaked havoc on Indian batting line-up early into the fourth day's play to help New Zealand register a comprehensive 10-wicket victory in the first Test at Basin Reserve, Wellington.

India resumed the day on 144/4 with all hopes resting on Ajinkya Rahane and Hanuma Vihari’s shoulders, but the reality soon struck. Boult, who took three wickets overnight, broke the 131-ball alliance by dismissing Rahane for 29.

The Indian vice-captain’s wicket triggered a collapse as the visitors slipped to 167/7 and their second innings eventually folded for 191.

While Southee dismissed Vihari (15), Rishabh Pant (25), Ravichandran Ashwin (4) and Jasprit Bumrah (0), Colin de Grandhomme got rid of Ishant Sharma.

Needing 9 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series, Kiwi openers Tom Latham (7 not out) and Tom Blundell (2 not out) completed the formality in 1.4 overs.

India 165 & 191 (Mayank Agarwal 58; Tim Southee 5-61; Trent Boult 4-39) lost to New Zealand 348 (Kane Williamson 89; Ross Taylor 44; Ishant Sharma 5-68, Ravichandran Ashwin 3-99) & 9/0 by 10 wickets.
