The International Cricket Council (ICC) has imposed 60 percent fine on New Zealand for maintaining a slow over-rate in the second ODI against India in Auckland on Saturday (February 8).

“Chris Broad of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after Tom Latham’s side was ruled to be three overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration,” the ICC said in a media release.

“In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time,” the release further stated.

Since stand-in Kiwi skipper Latham accepted the proposed sanction, there was no need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Chris Brown and Bruce Oxenford, third umpire Langton Rusere and fourth umpire John Dempsey levelled the charges.

Coming to the match, New Zealand registered a series-clinching 22-run victory in the second ODI over India.

Sent into bat, the hosts rode on measured knocks from Martin Guptill (79 off 79 balls) and Ross Taylor (73* of 74 balls) to post 273/8 in 50 overs.

Defending the total, the Black Caps bundled out the visitors for 251 in 48.3 overs. India’s top-order failed miserably as Shreyas Iyer (52 off 57 balls) was the only notable contributor.

The third and final ODI will be played at Mt. Maunganui on Tuesday (February 11).
