NZ v IND 2020: "It's about what's best for the team", Williamson ready to step aside if needed

Underfire Williamson will be hoping to get New Zealand back on track versus India.

Kane Williamson | GettyQuestions on his captaincy future since the end of the insipid tour to Australia were answered positively by Kane Williamson ahead of New Zealand's full series at home versus India as he said he is absolutely willing to continue in all three formats but wouldn't mind stepping aside if the selectors feel there is a better alternative available.

It was former captain Brendon McCullum, whom Williamson replaced four seasons ago, who raised doubts whether the man is being weighed down by the pressure of expectations when he struggled to provide any inspiration with the bat in the disastrous 3-0 Test series whitewash down under.

Williamson, however, said he remains committed to guide the Kiwi ship.

"I do feel fortunate to be leading such a great group of guys that share a similar passion, which is to keep moving this team forward," Williamson told reporters before the first of the five T20Is versus India on January 24.

"I'm not the only one that is trying to lead that – there are a number of other guys, senior players and some younger guys who obviously share the passion, and that's encouraged in the group."

"The leadership thing is a collective approach … it is enjoyable and you do learn so much about yourself and about the team," he added. "Without a doubt, there are a number of challenges that come throughout that period that you are in the job, and I've been in it for some time now, and you are forever dealing with those challenges."

"It's part and parcel of the job, but for me, the focus is very much helping the team to grow and move in the right direction."

Across the globe, workload concerns and dip in form have paved way for splits in leadership duties across formats. At the end of the forgettable visit to Australia, New Zealand did say that will be one of the options on the table going forward. Even Williamson isn't averse to the idea.

"For me it's always been about what's best for the team," he said. "If those discussions are to eventuate and collectively there's a thought that it would be best for the team, then my stance is whatever is right and fits the group."

"I'm always open to whatever is going to move the team in those directions."
