New Zealand won the toss and chose to bat first. Both teams decided to go in with the same teams. However, this time, the Kiwi openers were both dismissed for 12 runs each and Daryll Mitchell was dismissed for 1. Krunal Pandya was the chief destroyer, as he dismissed Kane Williamson for 20.

The Daryll Mitchell dismissal at the hands of Krunal caused a real drama, as the decision was reviewed. The hotspot showed a big spot as the ball passed the bat, while the DRS confirmed that he was out, with three reds. The 3rd umpire gave Mitchell out and Williamson had a long discussion with the umpires and even MS Dhoni talked to the Kiwi captain. In the end, Mitchell had to go back, much to the dismay of his captain.

However, Colin de Grandhomme scored a quick 28-ball 50 with 4 sixes, along with Ross Taylor making 42. New Zealand managed to make just 158/8 in their 20 overs, as Khaleel Ahmed picked two wickets for 27 runs. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Hardik Pandya also picked a wicket each.
