MS Dhoni earned an undesirable record after India lost the first T20I against New Zealand in Wellington. Indian team was defeated by 80 runs and their record of not winning a single match against New Zealand in their home continued.

In India's humiliating defeat, Dhoni was the top scorer with 39 runs in 31 balls. India was chasing a huge target of 220 runs and after a batting collapse where the top order hardly added any runs, the lower order had no choice left with 15-an over required in the second half of the innings.

Rohit Sharma scored one run, Shikhar Dhawan (29) and Vijay Shankar (27) couldn't convert the start and Rishabh Pant (4) never looked comfortable in the middle. Pant was impatient with his shots and bowlers took advantage of it. Dhoni and Krunal Pandya tried to stitch a partnership but it was too late as India were already 77/6.

Despite top-scoring for India in their embarrassing loss, MS Dhoni also continued his worst streak for the Indian team, as the team has lost all the T20Is in which Dhoni was the highest scorer.

India has lost the matches when Dhoni top-scored for India in T20I:

48* v Aus, Sydney, 2012 (Lost by 31 runs)
38 v Eng, Mumbai WS, 2012 (Lost by six wickets)
30 v NZ, Nagpur, 2016 (Lost by 47 runs)
36*v Eng, Kanpur, 2017 (Lost by seven wickets)
39 v NZ, W'ton, 2019 (Lost by 80 runs)
