NZ v IND 2019: Sunil Gavaskar feels Shubman Gill is future of India despite India's poor show in Hamilton

Shubman Gill made his India ODI debut in Hamilton against New Zealand.

Shubman Gill got to play his first ever international game for India, but it came in one of the worst defeats handed to the Indian team. The Indian team was bowled out for just 92 runs as Trent Boult's 5/21 blew them away in swinging conditions.

19-year-old Gill could only manage to score 9 runs on his ODI debut against a rampaging Kiwi attack.

Despite a dismal debut, former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar feels that there is a bright future for young Gill.

"Well, for whatever little time he was there, he was a little bit tense, nervous. That's understandable because he is playing for the country for the first time," Gavaskar told Star Sports. "Even then, when Boult was swinging the ball, he was able to get in line, yes... he was hit by the short ball as well. I think this guy's got a future, you have got to be patient with him.

"My feeling is that they'll probably have Dhoni coming in place of Karthik. Other changes will be based on the conditions in Wellington. I don't see too many changes though. I am sure Shubman Gill will get another opportunity."

Mike Hesson, the ex-New Zealand coach also feels Gill has the technique for the international level. "Gill does have the technique. On a surface that had plenty of bounce, he had the ability to punch off the back foot. He picked up the length nicely. He just looks like he's got a lot of time.

"Whenever you look at a quality player, you look at how they play the best bowlers. When Trent Boult was swinging the ball, very difficult conditions, probably quite foreign to something Gill will be used to, he showed enough glimpses to say 'look he is the guy we have got to invest in'."
