India demolished New Zealand by 8 wickets via DLS method in the first of five ODI at McLean Park in Napier and took a 1-0 lead in the series.

On a good batting track New Zealand opted to bat first but their openers couldn't give a good start and got out cheaply off Mohammad Shami's bowling. Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor tried to rebuild the innings but then Yuzvendra Chahal dismissed Taylor and following batsman Tom Latham and reduced New Zealand to 76/4.

Kane Williamson was rock solid at one end and brought up his fifty. In the end, Kuldeep Yadav removed New Zealand's last four batsmen and the hosts bowled out for just 157 runs and the revised target of 156 was chased down by India by 8 wickets. Shikhar Dhawan scored 75* runs and Virat Kohli also chipped in with 45 runs. Mohammad Shami was named Man of the Match for his 3 wickets haul.
