Robert Frylinck will lead South African Emeralds in the inaugural GPCL season | AFPThere is a lot of buzz in the sporting world about the upcoming Global Power Cricket League (GPCL), slated to be held in India from October 2 to October 9, 2022.

The inaugural edition of the T20 tournament will have eight teams, each from different nationalities. The participating teams are from India, Australia, England, USA, Ireland, Scotland, South Africa and Sri Lanka.

In this article, we are focusing on the team from South Africa called ‘South African Emeralds’.

For a team to do well in any tournament, the captain’s role becomes paramount and Robert Frylinck has been given the responsibility to lead South African Emeralds in the GPCL T20.

Frylinck has been around for a long time, having made his debut in professional cricket way back in 2004. The 37-year-old all-rounder has represented South Africa in three T20Is. While he didn’t get an opportunity to bat in international cricket, he took five wickets from those three appearances.

Robert Frylinck may not have got many chances in the Proteas national team, but he is counted amongst the top performers in South Africa’s domestic circuit.

In 75 First-Class matches, Frylinck has scored 2428 runs and picked 228 wickets while he amassed 1971 runs and claimed 168 scalps in List A cricket.

As far as his T20 exploits are concerned – the veteran campaigner has aggregated 1332 runs in 148 matches at an impressive strike rate of 148.82 while he has bagged 162 wickets at an economy rate of 7.75.

Frylinck was roped in by the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) for their 2011 Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign, but he didn’t get an opportunity to feature in the cash-rich league.

His rich experience and presence in the dressing room will certainly help the youngsters in the South African Emeralds squad.

For the inaugural GPCL T20, South African Emeralds are slotted in Pool B alongside Australian Golds, Sri Lankan Violets and Irish Olives. They will open their campaign against Sri Lankan Violets on October 2.
