Former Australian skipper Ian Chappell feels that Joe Root’s captaincy lacks imagination which might haunt England in the Ashes 2021-22. The Ashes 2021-22 will begin on December 8 at the Gabba and will culminate in Perth on January 18.

Former Australian skipper Ian Chappell In his column for ESPNCricinfo, raised concern over Joe Root’s captaincy saying that his leadership lacks imagination and reason. He added that in Australia captain has to her imagination but that is not Root’s strength.

"Root's captaincy often lacks imagination and reason. His tendency to have long discussions with senior players is reminiscent of Alastair Cook at his worstThere's a difference between a captain who consults and one who is uncertain; dithering is a bad look for a captain.

“There are times in Australia when a captain has to be imaginative to force the issue and this is none of Root's strengths," Ian Chappell wrote in his column for ESPNcricinfo.

“We are making good strides in right direction”, Joe Root pleased with the progress of England Test team

Chappell said that England has a series-winning group of fast bowlers but top-order batting and Joe Root’s captaincy is the cause of concern for England.

He added that the trio of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazelwood could be a ‘death sentence for England’.

“England possesses a potential series-winning group of fast bowlers. It is the top-order batting and Joe Root's captaincy that should be cause for concern. The opening combination of Dominic Sibley and Rory Burns is both ungainly and unconvincing.

“Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood should rejoice if both names appear in the top slots on the team sheet at the Gabba. Given the skill of Australia's pace trio, poor starts could be a death sentence for England,” he concluded.

England is currently playing two-match Test series against New Zealand while Australia will tour West Indies for a five-match T20I series and three ODIs in July 2021.
