Washington Sundar’s father M Sundar says that he’s staying in another house so that his son doesn’t catch COVID-19 from him, which can axe him from India’s tour of England next month.

Team India is set to play ICC World Test Championship final against New Zealand between 18-22th June at Rose Bowl in Southampton.

After the WTC final, the Virat Kohli-led side will lock horns against England in the five-Test series, starting 4th August.

With Washington Sundar also named in the 20-member squad that will board the flight to England, BCCI made it clear that if players test positive for COVID-19 when they assemble in Mumbai for the tour, then they would not be considered for selection.

With COVID-19 cases rising in Chennai, Sundar’s father, who works in the Income Tax department in Chennai and has to visit his office 2-3 times a week, is doing every possible thing he could do to not put his son’s England tour in jeopardy.

Talking to The New Indian Express, M Sundar said that since his son Washington Sundar returned from IPL, he’s staying in another house so that his son doesn’t contract coronavirus as he goes to the office a few days every week.

“Since Washington returned home from the IPL, I have been staying in another house. My wife and daughter are staying with Washington since they don’t step out of the house. I am only seeing him on video calls. I am having to go to the office a few days in a week. I don’t want him to contract Covid because of me,” M Sundar said.

He further revealed that Washington Sundar has always wanted to play at Lord’s and he doesn’t want to miss out on India’s tour to England.

“He has always wanted to play at Lord’s and at other venues in England. It has been a long-standing aim of his. He doesn’t want to miss out on this tour at any cost,” he said.

Washington Sundar was the main architect behind India’s triumph in Gabba down under. However, with the likes of Ravindra Jadeja, Akshar Patel, R Ashwin all in the squad, it would be interesting to see who will feature in the playing XI.
