West Indies’ 2012 & 2016 ICC T20 World Cup-winning captain and Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Peshawar Zalmi captain, Darren Sammy has reportedly applied for Pakistan's citizenship.

The Peshawar Zalmi team owner Javed Afridi has requested to make Sammy an honorary citizen of Pakistan, as he has forwarded the application for him to be awarded honorary citizenship to the president of the country, Arif Alvi recently.

Sammy is a popular face in Pakistan and has played a key role in bringing cricket back to Pakistan as he was among the first few foreigners who were always willing to come to the country to play besides being a successful cricketer and captain in the PSL having led the Zalmi to PSL title glory in 2017.

Sammy is now willing to become a citizen of Pakistan and Afridi helped the two-time T20 World Cup-winning star in the whole process for the honorary citizenship and was hopeful that the all-rounders' application to get accepted soon.

He has requested the Pakistan Cricket Board to help Sammy in the matter of citizenship, as he has always shown his love and admiration for Pakistan.

As per reports in cricketpakistan.com.pk, Afridi said: “We have requested for the honorary citizenship of Pakistan for Daren Sammy. The application is currently at President’s table. I request the PCB chairman to put in a good word for Sammy, so it can be approved. Sammy’s voice notes were too emotional for Pakistan when PCB was trying to hold the PSL season 2 finale in Lahore.”

Sammy has been a part of the PSL for all five seasons and he recently spoke about his love for the country: “For me, love is in the heart. It is an action and a feeling. For me whether I have a passport or not, I think my contribution to this country is all from within.”

He signed off by saying, “I don’t need a passport to associate myself with this country. It is not just me but all of the guys that have come here and showed there support, be it the World XI or other teams, have played a massive role in bringing back international cricket to Pakistan.”
