Sachin Tendulkar transcended the usual limits of fandom that a cricketer has and is often called the god of cricket. In a career spanning 24 years, Tendulkar ended up with most runs in Tests and ODIs and also has the greatest number of centuries in either of the two formats.

He had just one thing missing from his cabinet and it was a World Cup trophy. He had come close to winning it twice when India reached the semis in 1996 tournament at home and then was beaten in the finals in 2003 in South Africa.

Along with Sachin, the whole country knew that the 2011 World Cup edition which was held at home would be his last chance and he gave it his all with two centuries and a brilliant 85 against Pakistan in the semi-finals in Mohali. Though he failed in the finals, Gautam Gambhir and MS Dhoni did the job on his behalf and made Tendulkar a world champion.

Virat Kohli, who had played a neat little knock in the final, had said in the post-match interview that Tendulkar had carried the burden of over 1 billion people on his shoulders during his career and it was time to carry him on our shoulders. This happened when Kohli, Raina, and Yusuf Pathan, amongst others, lifted the greatest batsmen in cricket history on their shoulders and the moment has been nominated for the Laureus Sporting Moment 2000-2020.
