Sri Lanka's Sachithra Senanayake announces his retirement from international cricket

He last played for Sri Lanka in 2016.

Sri Lanka spinner Sachithra Senanayake has recently announced his retirement from all formats of in the international cricket with immediate effect.

However, the flamboyant right-handed batsman and a right-arm off-break bowler will continue to play domestic cricket after representing Sri Lanka for the last time in a T20 International against Australia in Colombo in September 2016.

Senanayake has represented Sri Lanka in 49 One Day Internationals, 24 T20 Internationals, and one Test match and the off-spinner went on to take 53 wickets and 25 wickets in the 50-over format and shortest format of the game respectively. Though, he went wicketless in the solitary Test match.

In a statement, Senanayake said: “I have informed Sri Lanka Cricket of my decision to retire from all forms of international cricket with immediate effect. I wish to thank each and everyone who stood by me and supported me over the years. I will continue to play domestic cricket but I know for a fact that I will not get a chance to play for the national team in the future. So I decided to quit.”

The 34-year-old, who played a key role in Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup win in 2014, has been regularly playing in the domestic circuit. He also played for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 2013.
