Matthew Hayden is surprised that Marcus Stoinis was ignored for South Africa tour but has asked CA to stick with Glenn Maxwell after he got the nod.

Marcus Stoinis has already scored 695 runs for the Melbourne Stars in the ongoing Big Bash League with a game to go and is the highest run-getter in the tournament. However, he did not get picked to play for Australia against South Africa. Instead, Glenn Maxwell, who is coming off a break from cricket, got picked.

Hayden said, “The problem of the one-day team is in the middle order,” said Hayden after watching Australia’s recent one-day series loss in India. They have someone like Steve Smith but they are missing that X-factor in the side (like) an Andrew Symonds who can just come in and nail an opposition in the back end of the game.

This is where Hayden feels Maxwell will come into the game and provide Australia the X-factor it needs. The 48-year-old believes that the Australian side lacked the X-factor on their tour to India and that is a big reason that they lost the ODI series.

That’s where Maxwell is really important. X-factor was definitely something that was missing in India. Maxwell is that quality I am talking about,” he said.

Matthew Hayden will be featuring in the Bushfire Cricket Bash on February 9.
