Ahead of the second ODI in Durban on Friday (February 7), South African wrist-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi is excited for the new chapter of his career after playing a key role in the hosts' 7-wicket win in the first ODI, saying he felt like he was starting his career in Cape Town.

Shamsi finished with the crucial figures of 3/38 to help the Proteas side to bowl England out for 258 – which the hosts chased down inside 47 overs thanks to Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma’s brilliance at the Newlands on February 4.

Now South Africa is leading 1-0 in the ongoing three-match ODI series against England and Shamsi is eager not to make any mistakes in the Durban ODI, as he is looking forward to becoming the permanent member of the national side after Imran Tahir’s retirement.

However, the left-arm spinner made his debut for South Africa more than three and a half years ago, but he got to play in only 18 of his team’s 67 ODIs since June 2016, thanks to South Africa's strategy of using only one front-line spinner and that usually was Tahir.

Now, the retirement of Tahir has opened the door for Shamsi and he grabbed it with both hands and he is keen to deliver another good performance for the hosts at home.

Shamsi said ahead of the second ODI, “I am excited to make mistakes along the way because now I have time to implement on them. Previously I was playing the odd game here and there and the mistakes I’ve made, it’s only three months later that I can try and implement lessons learned.”

The wrist-spinner signed off by saying, “There wasn’t that consistency. I’m excited and on the way, there will be mistakes as well but for me, this feels like the beginning. I’ve been involved with the team for a number of years but it was always the odd game here or there so I’m excited about this new chapter. It felt like I was starting my career in Cape Town.”
