The 24-year-old will go through a lengthy rehabilitation programme for the same as the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) wishes to have him fit and firing during the summer at home this year, including World Test Championship fixtures versus West Indies, Pakistan and a limited-overs assignment against arch-rivals Australia.

"Archer underwent further scans on his injured right elbow yesterday in the UK which confirmed a low-grade stress fracture," said an ECB media release.

"He will now commence an injury rehabilitation programme with the ECB medical team with a view to be ready for the international summer campaign starting in June against the West Indies in a three-match Test series."

Archer played a key role in England's successful 50-over World Cup campaign last year before making his Test debut for the country with the Ashes, when the three lions failed to get the urn back from the visitors.

After going through the first Test of the recent Test series in South Africa, Archer battled inflammation and pain in his right elbow, which resulted in him missing the subsequent three games of the bout, where the Englishmen retained the Basil d'Oliveira trophy, and the limited-overs leg of the tour that followed.
