Bapu Nadkarni, former India all-rounder passes away at the age of 86

Nadkarni was famous for bowling 21 consecutive maiden overs in a Test against England in Madras in 1964.

Bapu NadkarniRameshchandra Gangaram Nadkarni, better known as Bapu Nadkarni, the prolific all-rounder for India in the 1950s-60s, breathed his last at the age of 86 on January 17, 2020. He played 41 Tests for India from 1955-1968.

He also had a very good domestic record for Maharashtra and Mumbai, scoring 8880 runs and picking 500 wickets in 191 FC matches. In 41 Tests, he made 1414 runs with one century and 7 fifties, while picked 88 wickets with a best of 6/43. His highest FC score was 283* and he conceded just 1.67 runs per over in his Test career.

Nadkarni was ailing for quite some time and passed away at his daughter Anuradha Khare’s residence in Powai at 5.45 pm.

Nadkarni during his playing daysThe cricketing fraternity still remembers Nadkarni’s feat of bowling 21 successive maidens in the fourth Test against England in Madras in 1964. His analysis of 32-27-5-0 is still considered one of the finest displays of bowling in the longer format of the game.

In the 1960-61 series against Pakistan, he had bowling figures of 32-24-23-0 in Kanpur, followed by 34-24-24-1 in Delhi.
