Indian skipper Virat Kohli won the 'Spirit of Cricket', besides featuring as captain in the ICC's Test and ODI teams of the year. Kohli was picked because of his gesture of trying to stop the fans from booing Steve Smith during a World Cup match between India and Australia.

Smith, who had returned after serving a year ban for the sandpaper gate, was receiving hate from Indian fans during the match. Virat had stepped in to tell fans not to do it.

After winning the award, Kohli said he doesn't endorse such kind of personal attacks from fans. Although competitiveness is a must, Virat feels there should be a good camaraderie among the players. He clearly said that booing isn't good for any sport. One can have banter regarding the game but targetting someone emotionally isn't good.

Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir seemed inspired by Kohli's words. He lauded the India cricketer and wrote, "Great words from a great player."

Kohli and Amir are good friends as well as competitors. The India captain had once gifted his bat to Amir which is still seen as an example of sportsmanship.
