New Zealand’s stand-in captain for the third Test against Australia, Tom Latham, injured his finger during the match and will now miss out on the T20I series against India.

The southpaw opener was captain of the Kiwis as Kane Williamson was ruled out for the third Test. In the third innings of the match, Latham picked up a finger injury while taking the final catch of the declared Australian innings.

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) confirmed in a statement that an X-ray showed a fracture in Latham’s right pinky finger and it will take him about four weeks to get fully fit. This means that he will miss out on the 5 T20Is against India starting from 24 January but will be fit before the ODI series that starts on 5 February.

NZ v IND 2020: Team India selection for New Zealand tour on Sunday, January 12

The Kiwis had a horrid tour in Australia not only because of their below-par on-field performances but also because of the number of injuries and illnesses that the players suffered during the tour. Head coach Gary Stead gave an update of all the injured players after the series came to an end.

He said, “Lockie Ferguson (right calf strain) has returned to running and performing bowling drills. He'll continue to progress over the next couple of weeks with the potential to return to domestic cricket early next month. Trent Boult has been resting his broken right-hand and will return to bowling later this week. He'll be touch-and-go to be available for the Indian T20 series later this month and we'll continue to monitor him closely over the next few weeks.

Matt Henry has had his broken left-thumb splinted and will require around a month for it to fully heal. In this time he will still be able to practice bowling and will look at a return to play early next month. Kane, Henry, and Mitch are regaining their health after being struck down with Influenza A and will continue to be monitored as they slowly rebuild their strength and fitness,” he added.

India’s tour of New Zealand will begin on 24 January with the first T20I at Eden Park in Auckland.
