MSL 2019: Bay Giants topple off Spartans at St George's Park

Nelson Mandela Bay Giants won against Tshawne Spartans by six wickets.

Bay Giants won by six wickets | TwitterNelson Mandela Bay Giants this Tuesday (December 3) defeated Tshwane Spartans by six wickets in Port Elizabeth to consolidate their second position in the Mzansi Super League 2019 points table, leapfrogging their opponent which now sits third in the six-team tussle.

The result came about despite quality half-centuries from Wiaan Mulder (52) and AB de Villiers (63) propelling the Spartans to a fantastic total of 188/5 with leg-spinner Imran Tahir taking (2/28) for the Bay Giants, who also had skipper JJ Smuts (0/22) and Chris Morris (1/30) delivering economical spells.

In the run-chase, Bay Giants lost three early wickets and looked like going down on the day by a massive margin before wicketkeeper Ben Dunk (99* off 54) played one of the best knocks of the competition and with support from Ryan ten Doeschate (33) and Marco Marais (38*), completely turned the scenario upside-down, taking his team home in the final over.

With runs flowing, spells from Lungi Ngidi (2/37) and Morne Morkel (1/30) were the only ones worthy of note from Spartans, who suffered their second loss of the event in eight games, including three wins and three rain abandoned matches, while for Bay Giants, this was their fifth win in eight games alongside two losses and one washout game.

Brief Scores:

Tshwane Spartans 188/5 in 20 overs (AB de Villiers 63; Imran Tahir 2/28) lost to Nelson Mandela Bay Giants 192/4 in 19.4 overs (Ben Dunk 99*; Lungi Ngidi 2/37) by six wickets
