NZ v ENG 2019: Archer still has a lot to learn in Test cricket, says Root after latter's disappointing tour

Star pace sensation Jofra Archer has endured a disappointing New Zealand tour, as he could manage only 2 wickets in the two-match Test series that England lost 0-1 to the hosts with the second and final game ending in a draw in Hamilton on Tuesday, December 3.

Archer made a scintillating start to his Test career with 22 wickets in four Tests in the Ashes 2019, but he failed to replicate the magic show with the ball against the Black Caps.

Following his poor outing in New Zealand, Joe Root, England’s Test skipper, said Jofra has a lot to learn in Test cricket, as he feels the bowler has found the five-day format hard but insisted he is a fantastic talent and will contribute massively in the traditional format of the game.

Root told Sky Sports Cricket in Hamilton, “Jofra has found out that Test cricket is hard, that you have to keep backing it up and that you can sometimes bowl extremely well and get no reward.”

He continued, “I said at the start of the tour that there is a big expectation on him at the start of his career and that he still has a lot of learning to do. One thing for certain is that he is a fantastic talent and there is no doubt he is going to contribute massively for England in Test cricket.”

Meanwhile, the English skipper was confident that Archer will bounce back strongly as he is a fast learner but says the pacer has to learn how to stay resilient mentally and physically in all conditions.

The 28-year-old right-hander continued, “He has to want to learn and stay resilient mentally and physically as these conditions can wear you down. I expect him to bounce back strongly and he is a fast learner - he has proven that in domestic cricket around the world in franchise tournaments. Hopefully, we see him back at his best soon.”

Root signed off by saying, “He showed a great amount of variety in trying to take wickets and produce opportunities [in this series]. He bowled with no front arm, bowled his knuckleballs, a couple of leg-cutters, a quick bouncer every now and again. It shows he's got all the skills that are there, it's now just putting it all together. I'm sure he'll learn very quickly.”
