BCCI President Sourav Ganguly apparently lands himself in conflict of interest issue again

Ganguly's association with an online fantasy cricket portal has landed him in trouble.

Sourav Ganguly is brand ambassdor of My 11 Circle direct competitor of official BCCI partner Dream 11 BCCI President Sourav Ganguly will go down in Indian cricket history as the one who organized the first-ever day-night Test match in India involving the Indian team, which will be played at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata from November 22.

However, many fans and followers of the former India captain were left amused and confused by his latest tweet in which he promoted ‘Fantasy Cricket League – My11Circle‘, an online fantasy competition of which he is the brand ambassador. He promoted the upcoming Test series between India and Bangladesh which starts with the first match starting on November 14 at Holkar stadium in Indore.

The #INDvsBAN series is on fire! The excitement continues in the 3rd match with series leveled. Will #TeamIndia keep up the winning streak or will Bangladesh bounce back? Beat my team on @My11Cirlce & Win Big. Make Your Team Now!,” Ganguly tweeted on Friday.

This tweet raised voices of conflict of interest as Ganguly, the BCCI President was promoting an online promotion which is a direct competition of Dream 11, another similar company which has a four-year contract with BCCI as the official partner for the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Both companies allow their users to pick their fantasy XI before a cricket match and win cash prizes based on the performances of the individuals picked by them. With Ganguly sharing his playing XI while promoting the company, in the capacity of BCCI President, may influence players and national selectors, not to mention fans.

Ganguly was entangled in conflict of interest issue earlier in the year, when three cricket fans hailing from Bengal pointed out that apart from his then duty as Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) President, the former India skipper was rendering his services to IPL franchise Delhi Capitals and was also part of the elite Cricket Advisory Committee.

Ethics officer DK Jain said Ganguly’s case violated the conflict of interest clause and the 47-year-old was directed to relinquish his services and continue in not more than one position.
