Australia’s white-ball captain Aaron Finch has been named Northern Superchargers captain for the inaugural edition of The Hundred competition to be held next year in England.

The Northern Superchargers have confirmed the signing of Finch and Lauren Winfield as the captains of their men's and women's teams for the tournament on Tuesday (November 5).

The 32-year-old was the first pick of Headingley-based franchise during the players draft by head coach Darren Lehmann, who knows the opener well thanks to his earlier stint as head coach of Australia.

Finch, who has made 181 appearances for Australia across all formats of the game, felt honored with the opportunity to lead Superchargers in England’s franchise event.

Having played for seven different teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL) along with Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League (BBL) as well as Surrey and Yorkshire in the T20 Blast, besides 30 T20Is for Australia, Finch has abundance experience of T20 cricket and was excited to lead the excellent side in the tournament.

He will lead the likes of Ben Stokes, Ben Foakes, Adil Rashid, David Willey and Chris Lynn in the new competition and was confident of his team’s chances in England’s newest tournament.

Finch said on his appointment, “I think we have an excellent side with a good mixture of quality English cricketers and some match-winning overseas stars and I'm very confident of our chances when The Hundred kicks off next summer.”

The Aussie continued, “It's such an honour to be asked to captain the men's team. Obviously, I know Darren Lehmann really well and we understand how we both want to go about it. You can't underestimate the importance of that.

I've also had some good times up at Yorkshire and I look forward to seeing the fans again. We've got a really great spine with the likes of Adam Lyth, Adil Rashid and David Willey, and they know what it takes to win games of cricket up at Headingley. Then you add in the likes of Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Chris Lynn and it gets pretty exciting. I just can't wait to meet the guys next summer and have that first net.”

Meanwhile, Northern’s head coach Lehmann said of Finch, “I think we've picked a great team and I'm really excited to see what Aaron and I can do with the group. He is a world class cricketer and a superb leader. We want to start The Hundred with a bang and get even more people watching this innovative new short-form of cricket.”

On the other hand, Winfield, who captained Yorkshire Diamonds in the Kia Super League as well as had stints in the Women’s Big Bash League with Brisbane Heat, Hobart Hurricanes and Adelaide Strikers, is excited to be part of the Hundred tournament.

Winfield signed off by saying, “Women's cricket has been going from strength to strength over the last few years and I'm delighted to be a part of the next chapter as captain of the Northern Superchargers. The Hundred means new teams, new kit, new team-mates, it's all very exciting for everyone involved and I can't wait to get out on the field next year and hopefully help lead the team to success.”
