Former South Africa batsman Hashim Amla has been signed up as a batting consultant by the Cape Town Blitz for the upcoming 2019 edition of the Mzansi Super League (MSL) on Monday (November 4).

He retired from international cricket after World Cup 2019 and subsequently withdrew his name from the MSL draft, where he was named as cover for Pakistan paceman Wahab Riaz, who will miss a part of the tournament due to the national duty in Australia, but has agreed to join the Blitz on a coaching role.

Since his last competitive outing against Sri Lanka on June 28 in the World Cup, the 36-year-old will be now seen in action for Karnataka Tuskers in the Abu Dhabi T10 League, starting November 15. Recently, the Proteas cricketer also signed a two-year Kolpak deal with Surrey.

While the second edition of South Africa’s T20 league will get underway on November 8, the Blitz head coach Ashwell Prince confirmed that Amla will join the side only on November 25 after his T10 League commitments, though, by then the side would have played six of their ten group-stage games in the tournament.

Prince said in a statement, “Hashim has a wealth of experience and knowledge of the game and we're really looking forward to him bringing that to our management team.”

He signed off by saying, “There are obviously a few very promising young batsmen in our squad, and I think they will benefit immensely from having him around. It's also an opportunity for him to explore whether a position such as a batting consultant could be something that he might want to take up in the future. I have no doubt that he'd do a great job at it if he did.”

Noteworthy, Amla has played 154 matches in his T20 career, including 44 T20Is, and went on to score 4284 runs at a strike rate of 126.14. He has 1277 T20I runs at a strike rate of 132.05 to his name.
