Former England captain Michael Vaughan named MS Dhoni as the best limited-overs captain of this era. India won two showpiece ICC tournaments this decade, and both came under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. After winning World Cup 2011, they also bagged Champions Trophy title in 2013. He had earlier led India to victory in the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007. India also came close to winning the T20 World Cup trophy in 2014 but lost in the final to Sri Lanka.

Dhoni gave up the white-ball captaincy in 2017 and handed it over to Virat Kohli. India has performed well under Kohli, but his tactics and decisions have often come under scrutiny.

For Kohli, Vaughan thinks his energy is exhilarating to watch in Test cricket. “Eoin Morgan was a revelation in 50-over cricket. MS Dhoni doesn’t do international captaincy anymore, but in our era, Dhoni is the best white-ball captain I have seen…the way he manoeuvres from behind the stump just reads the play, thinks out of the box, handles the pressure card and is also great with the bat. In Tests, Virat Kohli is busy, energetic, a brilliant batsman, full of life. I like the way he captains,” Vaughan told Times of India.

Vaughan stressed on the importance of the off-field tactics, which plays a significant role in the match.

“It goes beyond the actual tactical side of the pitch. You need to have a strong cricketing brain and a strong idea of how to manage people. It is also the way you portray yourself in public, how you handle the media, the messages you send, the structure and goal that you set for the team. Good captains give their team a vision of what they want to achieve over the course of the next few months and years,” Vaughan further added.
