Misbah-ul-Haq has taken up the job of Pakistan cricket team’s head coach as well as the chief selector. Former cricketer Mohammad Yousuf has criticized him heavily saying that Waqar Younis was a better option for the head coach position.

He has a valid point about Misbah travelling with the team as head coach and therefore not being able to have a watch over the domestic cricketers. He will then have to pick these players only on the basis of what the scorecards will show.

Yousuf said, “The head coach will be with the national team then how would he be able to watch first-class players with his own eyes? The chief selector will have to rule on the basis of scorecards or through what the provincial coaches feed him. So if provincial coaches have to do all the work then what was the need of a chief selector?”

He was also stunned by how Waqar settled for the role of bowling coach when he was more qualified to take up the more important job. However, he also stated that the former pacer changed his attitude when he got a big position and that must be worked upon by him.

“I am appalled that how could Waqar Younis settle for the bowling coach’s role when on merit he should have been the head coach and chief selector. There is no doubt that he (Waqar Younis) was an extraordinary fast bowler but whenever he gets [an important] position his attitude changes. Abdul Razzaq, Shoaib Akhtar and Shahid Afridi can all corroborate this. Even others can, too, but they are young. Waqar Younis will have to change this habit of his,” the 47-year-old said.

He stated that the current Pakistan team facing Sri Lanka is much better than the visiting team as they do not have the ‘legends’ they used to.

He said, "This Sri Lankan team does not have a Muralitharan or a Sangakkara or a Jayawardene. Our team is a lot better than them."
