There was a massive uproar from Indian fans when BCCI's request to ICC to let MS Dhoni wear his army regiment's badge on wicketkeeping gloves during the World Cup in the UK was turned down.

Sporting the regimental dagger insignia of the army’s special forces was a breach of the ICC guidelines as players are allowed to showcase only the team’s signs and colors on all parts of their clothing.

Hence, Dhoni had to immediately change gloves from the next World Cup encounter onwards, which the great cricketer politely did. But the incident also raised a question whether the BCCI didn't fully know the ICC guidelines over the matter before writing a request letter?

"That was a non-issue. What he wore was not the insignia of his regiment. But he wore something… At that point, at least I did not know that the ICC had rules about what you can put on your gloves. I was taken by surprise," Vinod Rai, chief of the supreme court-appointed Committee of Administrators told Indian Express

"I said, look, if he is wearing it, he is free to wear it, and I supported him. Then I was shown 11 pages of ICC norms which say that you can only have your team’s insignia and that of the manufacturers. So we had to withdraw."

"It was a genuine oversight by me. Why should I name anybody else? I did not know that there are such instructions."

On Dhoni, the former India skipper hasn't played a game since the World Cup semi-final loss to New Zealand at Old Trafford. The speculations of his retirement from international cricket have been rife ever since.

The 38-year-old hasn't been available for selection in limited-overs cricket either with him earlier going on a training camp with the territorial army and missing the tour of West Indies in August. Dhoni is neither part of the ongoing T20I series versus South Africa.
