Gautam Gambhir believes BCCI should retire jersey number 12 in honor of Yuvraj Singh

Gambhir called Yuvraj a once-in-a-lifetime cricketer while remembering his heroics in 2007 World T20.

Yuvraj Singh was India's match-winner in ODI cricket during his playing days. The southpaw was instrumental in India's T20 World Cup 2007 win, before playing a huge role in World Cup 2011 victory. Yuvraj was undoubtedly a complete player during his prime days. Whether it's ball or bat, he gave it all.

Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir feels it's time for BCCI to give Yuvraj a tribute by retiring number 12 jersey. Writing for The Times of India, Gambhir remembered the 2007 T20 World Cup win. He reminisced the contribution of Yuvraj and how he had dispatched Broad for six sixes in an over.

"The month of September, meanwhile, has special emotions for me," Gambhir wrote in TOI. "It was in this month in 2007 that we won the ICC T20 World Cup. The incredible Yuvraj Singh was in his elements. Just for the performance in that tournament and the 2011 World Cup, I'd urge BCCI to retire the number 12 jersey that he wore. It will be a fitting tribute to a once-in-a-lifetime cricketer."

Yuvraj had scored 148 runs at a strike-rate of 194 in the tournament. Gambhir himself was the second-highest run-getter in the event with 227 runs.  "Overall, our win typified how 'keeping-it-simple' works. Perhaps playing the inaugural T20 World Cup worked for us," Gambhir said.

He added, "We didn't know what was coming. Hence, rather than worrying about the future, we concentrated on the next delivery. I remember asking my dear friend Yuvraj the secret of hitting those six sixes against England. Prince as I call him fondly said, "Gauti yaar buss ho gaya (it just happened), I never planned. What Yuvraj is saying is he kept it simple. He batted with a clear mind."
