Former India captain Sourav Ganguly believes that KL Rahul will face a stiff challenge from Shreyas Iyer and Manish Pandey to keep his place in India’s limited-overs squad.

The Karnataka batsman has already lost his place in India’s Test squad because of lack of consistency with the bat and now his place as a middle-order batsman in the ODI side also looks in danger, according to the president of Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB).

Ganguly believes that Iyer and Pandey are the two probable contenders for India’s No.4 spot, which is still a headache for the national team management despite trying a lot of players in the ODIs.

In his column for Times of India, Ganguly wrote: “With Rohit and Shikhar at the top as the best possible opening pair, KL Rahul will be pushed. He has lost his place in Test cricket due to indifferent form and the likes of Shreyas and Manish Pandey will keep him on his toes if he wants to hold onto the No. 4 slot.”

Meanwhile, Iyer was preferred over Rahul in the West Indies ODIs and the right-hander did justice with his call, scoring two half-centuries and the Indian great feels his show forced his way into India’s T20I XI against South Africa. He further added, “Shreyas Iyer finds a place in the T20 squad, a reward for his good show in the 50-overs games in West Indies.”

With the return of Hardik Pandya, India team looks even better-balanced side and Ganguly feels “Hardik makes a comeback and will look to consolidate his place as the premier all-rounder in every format.”

While South Africa’s struggle continued in India as well after dismal World Cup 2019 and former India captain feels they need to look at the system back home to lift their game.

Ganguly signed off by saying, “South Africa is in a rebuilding phase. They need to look at the system back home. Not very long ago, they boasted of having enormous talent, but like many teams, they have dropped a few levels down.”
