India chief selector MSK Prasad on Monday (September 9) expressed concern over KL Rahul's poor form in Test cricket and hinted that Rohit Sharma might take up the opening spot in the longest format as well.

Considering his recent form and reputation, Rohit was expected to be the first choice for the No. 6 slot during the recently held Test series against West Indies. But the team management surprised many by picking Hanuma Vihari over the Indian ODI vice-captain and the former proved his worth by registering the scores of 32, 93, 111 and 53* across the two Tests in the Caribbean.

With Vihari sealing the No. 6 spot, Rohit can only be tried out and fit in as an opener in the Test side just like he was promoted to open the innings for India in ODIs six years ago.

"As selection committee we haven't met after the conclusion of the West Indies tour. We will definitely take this (Rohit as opener) point into consideration when we all meet and discuss about it," MSK Prasad said in an exclusive interview with India Today.

"KL (Rahul) is definitely a great talent. Of course, he is going through a bit tough time in Test cricket. We are definitely concerned about his form. He needs to spend more time on the wicket and regain his touch and form," he added.

Rahul failed to register a substantial score in the four innings against West Indies. Despite getting good starts in both the innings of Antigua Test, Rahul threw away his wicket on 44 and 38 while he made 19 runs across the two innings in Jamaica.

It is certainly an alarming situation for Rahul, who hasn't managed a 50+ score since his 149 against England at the Oval back in September 2018.
