Saqlain Mushtaq, England’s spin bowling coach and former Pakistan spinner, on Wednesday, 14th August, confirmed that he has applied for the position of head coach of the Pakistan Under-19 team.
The 42-year-old, who has already worked with New Zealand, Australia, West Indies and Bangladesh as their spin consultant or coach, and is currently working with England, will be interviewed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday, 19th August.
Saqlain confirmed to reporters on Wednesday, “I have applied and my interview is next week. I just feel that I can contribute a lot to Pakistan cricket. I have acquired a lot of coaching experience working around the world but I have worked a lot with young players at Somerset and Middlesex counties and with different academies all over the world.”
The PCB has begun their revamp process of the national cricket team after they failed to qualify for the semi-finals at World Cup 2019, having already sacked head coach Mickey Arthur and his support staff.
It is being said that the PCB is likely to invite applications for the senior national team coaching positions after the Eid holidays, while they are willing to hire a high-profile player/coach for the junior team like Indian Cricket Board (BCCI).
The scene of India’s junior cricket has completely changed since Rahul Dravid took over the charge as the coach of Indian Under-19 and A teams and now PCB also wants to follow the footsteps of the BCCI.
