Sri Lanka’s limited-overs skipper Lasith Malinga on Saturday, 23 March, revealed that he will call time on his international cricket after the 2020 T20 World Cup to be played in Australia.

Malinga further went on to reveal that he will retire from One Day International cricket after the upcoming 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup in England and Wales starting from 30 May before saying goodbye to his international career following the World T20 to be played over October-November 2020.

The 35-year-old made the announcement on Friday after Sri Lanka’s 16 runs defeat in the second T20I at the hands of South Africa at SuperSport Park –which saw them 0-2 down in the ongoing 3-match T20I series with the final to be played on Sunday (24 March).

Lasith Malinga was Sri Lanka's captain when they won the ICC World T20 in 2014 held in Bangladesh, defeating India in the finals. Malinga told reporters on Friday, “After the World Cup, my cricketing career is ending. I want to play in the T20 World Cup and then end my career.”

Noteworthy, Malinga has 322 wickets and 550 runs in 218 ODIs while 97 wickets and 92 runs in 72 T20Is to his name since making debut in 2004 and 2006 respectively.
