Dilip Vengsarkar doesn't agree with Virat Kohli fielding on the boundary in limited overs cricket, saying Indian captain should take more responsibilities, especially in ODIs while suggesting him to stay in the 30-yard circle rather than fielding in the deep to make the most of his superior outfielding.

While Kohli often prefers to field in the deep to give strength to Indian fielding, MS Dhoni has been seen taking care of any tactical field changes in consultation with the bowlers, but the former chairman of selectors doesn’t believe this is the best way of approaching captaincy.

Vengsarkar’s comment came after Kohli failed to lead India to a win over Australia in both T20I and the ODI series at home and former skipper looks unimpressed with the method of Kohli in ODIs.

On Friday, 15 March, Vengsarkar told India Today, “Captain has to be in the inner circle. You can't field in the deep and adjust fielding from there. You can see the match better from the circle. If he is going to field in the deep it is not going to help him at all.”

On being asked if Kohli needed to take greater charge of things in ODIs, Vengsarkar replied, “Absolutely. You can only field in the deep during the slog overs.”

Meanwhile, he agreed with the idea of head coach Ravi Shastri to bat Kohli at no.4 during the upcoming 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, starting from 30 May.

He explained, “I agree with Ravi. Because sometimes in English overcast conditions, if you lose early wickets, you may have to preserve Virat for no.4. because he is the best batsman in the world and in fantastic form. India depends heavily on him which is not a good thing because others have to perform.”

Vengsarkar also backed Dhoni to shine in the World Cup 2019. He signed off by saying, “Dhoni can play a very important role. He also has form on his side. He can bat at no. 6 or no.5 whatever suits the team. But he should be able to deliver.”
