Australian spinner Nathan Lyon was taken aback by the sudden decision of David Saker to resign as fast-bowling coach of the national side. He learned the latest development via phone call on Thursday (7th February).

On Thursday, Saker stepped down as Australian assistant coach with immediate effect on a mutual decision with head coach Justin Langer.

While Langer has insisted that he and Saker, who had joined the Australian bowling group in 2016, took the decision with mutual approval in the build-up to the 2019 World Cup and Ashes and even revealed that there were "ongoing discussions" about his role, but Lyon said he didn’t aware about that talks.

Lyon told the media, “I was shocked by it, to be honest, I'm a bit disappointed. I was taken aback. I didn't really catch on about anything in Canberra after a great Test win, I didn't think anything of it and he didn't mention anything to me. I'm not part of those conversations between the coach and management but he's been great for me, massive support, so he'll be missed for sure.”

Meanwhile, the spinner further added that the bowlers enjoyed working with Saker while revealing that he was not part of those conversations behind closed doors about his role.

Lyon signed off by saying, “I really enjoyed working with David and I know I'm talking on behalf of the all the fast bowlers as well. But it is what it is, he's got my support, but I'm not part of those conversations behind closed doors. We'll just have to crack on and make sure we get our bowling plans for the World Cup and Ashes down pat.”
