West Indies skipper Rovman Powell admitted that the Caribbean side failed to read the conditions at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium that cost them the Sylhet match and three-match One Day International series 1-2 against Bangladesh on Friday (December 14).

With misreading the conditions at Sylhet, West Indies erred in their team formation for the third and final ODI, resulting they suffered heavy defeat of 9-wickets against Bangladesh on Friday.

Captain Powell further said the Windies aren't improving and the biggest concern is the batting and that is something they need to work hard at nets and come up with strategic plans on how to win games ahead of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup in England in May.

Powell told media, “We did (misread the pitch). If we hadn't misread the wicket we wouldn't have dropped Oshane Thomas. He is our fastest bowler and I think we needed him on that wicket. It's just one of those things, we thought the wicket will spin a little bit more and it didn't spin.”

He continued, “We honestly thought the conditions would have spun a little bit more. We didn't know about so much dew at this ground; it's even more dew than what was in Dhaka. We are just reading conditions wrong and that is just a part of human nature.”

On batting show, the skipper further noted, “But through the entire series, the batting unit didn't stand; it has been a problem for us over the last few series and, to be honest, we aren't improving. West Indies are T20 champions. We have a very good T20 team. We just have to get familiar with conditions. We know that there is a lot of dew and it is a good wicket and come out and play the brand of cricket that West Indies want to play.”

He also believes that Windies will have to go back to the nets, rework strategy and work extremely hard to make themselves a competitive unit ahead of World Cup 2019, saying: “From this period to the World Cup we just have to keep believing and go back to the brand of cricket that West Indies want to play. Go in the nets and train and come up with strategic plans on how to win games.”

Powell signed off by saying, “Have to be competitive and we have enough good players, to be honest. We have enough personnel in the West Indies that can turn around West Indies cricket. The players are entrusted in doing that and maybe sometimes they are too anxious to play and they make mistakes. It's just for the board to continue to support the players selected and I am sure at the World Cup West Indies can be very competitive.”
