Vice-captain Alex Carey has come out in support of under-fire Australian batsmen ahead of India series following their horrifying loss in a rain-curtailed one-off T20 International against South Africa on Saturday (November 17) in Queensland.

The T20I encounter reduced to 10 overs a side due to rain, and Glenn Maxwell was the only batsman from the Australian side who have crossed the 15 run mark, scoring 38 off 23 balls, but his innings could not prevent the hosts from facing another defeat, as they fell 21 runs short of the Proteas’ 6/108.

The defeat has one again unfolded the Aussie top six which had already struggled in a 2-1 One Day International series defeat against South Africa, where the hosts managed totals of 152, 231 and 280.

Following the disappointing limited-overs series against South Africa, Australians have been receiving criticism especially for their poor batting, and Shane Warne was really critical, slamming the batters for poor shot selection and terrible decision making over and over again in all forms of the game.

But Carey, the Australian T20I vice-captain, defended his teammates by saying the things happen pretty quickly in T20 cricket, but people should have to stick with the players, as they have called up on the back of their domestic show, therefore, the people have to trust on the players.

Carey said on RSN Radio on Tuesday, “It’s really hard when you’re not winning. The questions do get asked and for us, the boys that have been picked in this side have been successful at T20 cricket obviously. They’re obviously doing something right at that time (in domestic cricket) but I guess right now if we’re not winning games, you’re probably questioning our players and our dismissal modes … but in T20 cricket you’ve got to assess pretty quickly what bowler you want to take down and have a look at the fields and it all happens pretty quickly.”

He signed off by saying, “The guys in our side have had success doing what they do best. Internally we trust all our players to understand the conditions, understand the game and understand their game and go out and not question that when they’re under pressure.”
