Rohit can be as destructive in Tests as Viv and Sehwag were, says Sunil Gavaskar

With his outstanding form in recent times, Rohit Sharma has captured everyone's imagination on just how good he can still be, in Test matches. Legendary Sunil Gavaskar, much like the national selectors who've picked the right-hander for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, is one of them and he feels that the Mumbaikar can transfer some of his explosive limited overs might into the tough realms of red-ball cricket, like the great Vivian Richards and the amazing Virender Sehwag did.

It is the suitability of Rohit Sharma's game for the expected pace and bounce conducive surfaces down under, that was considered before deciding on his comeback, reiterated chief selector MSK Prasad.

Writing in his column for Times of India, Gavaskar noted, “The standout performer in both the limited overs series and the T20 series(against West Indies) has been Rohit Sharma," and compared, "Like Virender Sehwag before him, he is unstoppable once he gets going and like Viru he has an appetite for big hundreds," before reaffirming, "When Viru used to get out looking to hit another delivery out of the park, there used to be consternation around the ground, just like it is when Rohit gets out to a seemingly casual shot,"

“If Rohit can turn his white ball exploits into red ball cricket, he will be the most destructive batsman in the world after Viv Richards and Virender Sehwag,” he further asserted on Rohit, who, following his outstanding ton at Lucknow, is just 69 runs away from becoming the leading run-scorer in the world in T20 Internationals.

The T20I series against West Indies ends with the final encounter at Chennai on Sunday, November 11, Rohit will then be seen in action during the upcoming tough tour of Australia, which starts with the first T20I at Gabba on November 21.

Before, The Border-Gavaskar Trophy begins at Adelaide from December 6.
