A photo of a sanitation worker holding the replica Man of the Match cheque is going viral on social media. The picture posted in the social media page of ‘Prakruti’, an organization of techies which is engaged in environment-friendly initiatives, is posing serious questions regarding waste management to BCCI, which organized the recent one-day international in Sports Hub Kariavattom here.

Corporation worker Jayan is seen holding the replica Man of the Match cheque that was presented to Ravindra Jadeja in the match and was later dumped in the waste.

Let this be the man of the match moment for Jayan, sanitary worker, Trivandrum corporation. He is one among the 600 sanitary workers deployed by Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation for post-match cleaning. Segregation of wastes after the match is still in progress and we got this picture for you from the segregation yard,” said that post.

The post said that the gesture that is meant to honor a player turns to someone’s liability after the match. The post urges BCCI to consider reducing plastic and other non-biodegradable materials during cricket matches.

Prakruti member Biju Sundaran, who clicked the picture, said, “When we went to the segregation area of the corporation, we could see a number of sanitation works led by health inspector Shaiju engaged in cleaning activities after the match. It was there we saw this placard. The BCCI could explore another environment-friendly possibility to honor a player.

Biju said that comparing the one-day match with the T-20 match held last year, the amount of plastic waste generated has reduced to a large extent due to a persistent campaign. “People also co-operated for the segregated dumping of waste in bins. BCCI can do a lot on this. A simple step from their part could introduce a major change,” he said.
