Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif was named assistant coach of Delhi Daredevils for the upcoming 2019 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Friday (November 9).

The franchise announced the signing of Kaif by confirming, “Delhi Daredevils have roped in former Indian batsman Mohammad Kaif as their assistant coach for the upcoming Indian Premier League season.”

Kaif, who was roped in as a talent scout in the DD set-up, is set to join the Daredevils support staff, which already boasts of Ricky Ponting as the head coach and former Aussie all-rounder James Hopes as the bowling coach for the upcoming T20 extravaganza in the country.

The 37-year-old, who already served as assistant coach of Gujarat Lions in the IPL 2017, is delighted to be part of the DD family and looking forward to bringing together an exciting group of boys next season.

He told reports, “I’m delighted to be part of the Delhi Daredevils and am looking forward to bringing together an exciting group of boys, who are going to make their franchise and country proud. With the management team’s support, I am sure we’ll help nurture many of the younger boys in the squad and make this team a force to be reckoned with in the IPL.”

Meanwhile, DD Director Mustafa Ghouse said of kaif's signing, “He brings in huge amounts of experience and a keen understanding of the game to our backroom staff. He’s highly admired on the circuit and will be a natural mentor for the youngsters in the team. We are confident that his leadership and guidance will help the team tremendously in the new IPL season.”

Noteworthy, Kaif announced his retirement earlier this year after over two decades First-Class career, which finished off around 10229 runs in 186 matches. He also played 125 ODIs and 13 Tests for India.
