Seven months after the infamous ball-tampering scandal in Cape Town, another victim has been scalped as Cricket Australia chairman, David Peever, put forward his resignation in the wake of an independent review of the governing body’s culture.

Peever announced his resignation late on Thursday (November 1) afternoon following a CA board meeting. Peever was unanimously re-elected by the states as chairman at CA’s annual general meeting last Friday. However, that re-election came three days ahead of the release of the Ethics Centre’s review, before the states had got the chance to see it.

"Cricket Australia has today confirmed that Mr. David Peever has announced his resignation as chairman of the board of Cricket Australia, effective immediately," CA said in a statement.

An independent review into the entire incident has condemned an “arrogant” and “controlling” culture at Cricket Australia that led to players cheating in pursuit of victory. It has accused CA of only paying lip service to the spirit of the game and not doing anything for the moral guidance of players. Pressure was mounting on Peever since the findings of the report were made public on Monday.

Peever’s deputy Earl Eddings has been appointed as interim chairman. Peever joined the CA Board in 2012 and became chairman in 2015, having served an 18-month term as deputy chairman.

“We thank David for his service,” Eddings said in a statement. “He has played a pivotal role in the elevation of women’s cricket, and the significant growth in attendance and participation. He should also be acknowledged for his efforts in improving funding to the ICC full member nations outside Australia, England and India; overhauling governance of the ICC and reforming the Future Tours program, among a long list of achievements."

“We look forward to continuing the important process of recovering and rebuilding for Cricket Australia and Australian Cricket. The Board is keenly aware that we have a way to go to earn back the trust of the cricket community. We and the executive team are determined to make cricket stronger,” he added.

The ball-tampering scandal had already cost Darren Lehmann his position as coach, while Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft are all currently serving bans.
