Sourav Ganguly was expecting MS Dhoni's exclusion from T20I squad, says he is not surprised

Ganguly also added that Dhoni should be given more matches before World Cup 2019.

Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly expressed no surprise after MS Dhoni's snub from T20I squad. The Indian wicket-keeper has been replaced by Rishabh Pant for series against West Indies and Australia. Ganguly wants Dhoni to be a part of Ranji Trophy 2018-19 to get back in the groove.

"I am not surprised that MS Dhoni has been dropped from the T20 squad because his performance hasn't been great. If you see the 2020 World T20, I don't think Dhoni will play that far and that's why the selectors have given chance to Rishabh Pant who is in a good form," Ganguly told India TV.

Apart from Dhoni, skipper Virat Kohli is rested from the side. Rohit Sharma will lead India against West Indies. Kohli, however, is included for the series down under.

It is doubted that the 37-year-old is rested, as said by chief selector MSK Prasad. Prasad said Dhoni's T20I career isn't over yet and he is just rested for next six shorter format matches. But we have seen Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin completely disappearing from the limited-overs side after being rested post ICC Champions Trophy 2017. Jadeja has somehow managed to get a place back in the side because of his all-round ability.

Ganguly added that if India wants Dhoni for World Cup 2019, then he should be given more matches. "I have one issue here... I feel if the selectors are going to stick with Dhoni till the 2019 World Cup, then I think he should be given enough matches.

"He doesn't play domestic cricket so after the last ODI against West Indies, Dhoni will next play in Australia in the ODI series and after that against New Zealand. That's a long gap in cricket."

Ranji Trophy is kicking off from November 1 and it is high time selectors should ask Dhoni to join the tournament, feels Ganguly. "The selectors should ask him to play in Ranji Trophy so that he stays in touch with the game and regains his form back. You might be a big player but if you don't play regularly, you will end up losing your touch," he said.
