PCB could begin fresh inquiry against Danish Kaneria after spot-fixing confession

Kaneria was banned for life in 2012 by PCB, after being proven guilty of spot-fixing games in England domestic cricket.

Having finally confessed to being guilty of spot-fixing after six years of denial, the troubles might not end here for Danish Kaneria, as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) can still reinitiate another investigation against the banned leg-spinner.

Claimed to have spot-fixed matches in the county championship, Kaneria was subsequently banned by England and Wales Cricket Board in 2012.

Following the International Cricket Council’s Anti-Corruption protocol, the PCB, then, charged a life ban on Kaneria, as the veteran cricketer got found guilty of spot-fixing and offering others to also indulge in illegal activities in the English domestic scene.

As a result of the latest hearing, Kaneria has lost a round of appeals against his life ban and will have to, now, pay around 10,000 pounds to the ECB for the case.

A PCB source close to development of the matter was quoted saying, “Kaneria’s confession is a serious matter and this week the Chairman of the board, Ehsan Mani will have deliberations with his legal team and the Board’s Anti-Corruption and Vigilance officials to see if a new inquiry should be opened up against Kaneria since he has now admitted to corruption,”

It also added that the board wants to still ascertain whether Kaneria had any links with bookmakers from Pakistan, to safeguard the game in its own territory of operation.

“The board adopted a soft stance on Kaneria despite his life ban. But now it could move to completely blank him out of the cricket scenario,” it said, “In the past, it came to the PCB’s notice that Kaneria had played in a private event in Bangkok and elsewhere but it kept quiet on it,” and signed off.
