Matthew Hayden to consult the same doctor who saved his career 22 years ago

Former Australia opener Matthew Hayden recently fractured his spine near the base of his neck while surfing during a holiday in Queensland. Apart from the spine fracture, he also tore several ligaments and hurt his forehead after being dumped into a sandbank.

"Fractured C6, torn C5, C4 ligaments safe to say I truly have dodged a bullet. Thank you, everyone. On the road to recovery," Hayden wrote in an Instagram post on Monday.

In a bid to recover properly, Hayden apparently has decided to consult the same doctor who resurrected his career after a back injury in 1996.

“Have specialist appointment tomorrow, ironically from the same dude when I last broke my lower back (sweeping a cricket ball) 22 years ago. Feel a bit silly that as both then and now were just every day innocuous incidents, guess that’s where the expression, ‘sh** happens’ comes from,” Hayden was quoted as saying by TOI on Wednesday.

Hayden, who retired from international cricket in 2009 after a 103-Test career, also gave the glimpse of his top-notch sense of humour amidst this difficult time.

“Will let you know how things progress. In the meantime, at home I will be milking the injury for all its worth. No ironing, no hanging clothes on the line, no making beds……hahahaha! I’m loving this list of not to do’s and the best part, it’s all fully condoned by professionals,” the southpaw joked.
