India’s head coach Ravi Shastri becomes the topic of discussion on social media whenever the national cricket team does not perform well. During India’s disappointing Test series defeat in England last month, Shastri was lambasted by the fans and former cricketers.

He was also criticized for terming Virat Kohli and his men as the best performing lot in overseas conditions among all the Indian teams of last 15-20 years. However, the chief coach seems to be unfazed by people’s opinion.

"I sleep absolutely sound as I am used to my era where you would have one or two papers only so you pick it up and read it. So I have time only for that. I don’t have time for anything else. I may be on Twitter or Instagram....I only tweet ..I don’t read anything. Go hell with what people have to say as long as you are confident of what you are doing. You know that you are giving your 100% to the job you are doing. Rest is....I am not worried at all. If you start worrying about that, you start messing up a lot of other things.....so I say ignorance is bliss," Shastri said in a recent interview with Gulf News.

In 2014, Shastri was appointed as the director of the Indian cricket team. He played the role till 2016 before the board named Anil Kumble as the head coach. Due to some differences with skipper Virat Kohli, Kumble resigned as India’s coach after the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 and then Shastri threw his hat into the ring.

Subsequently, the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) committee of BCCI comprising of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman handed the job to Shastri till 2019 World Cup.

Under him, India have performed well in Asian conditions but they lost both the Test series outside Asia. Earlier this year, India lost the three-match Test series in South Africa 2-1 while they conceded the five-Test series in England 4-1.

India’s tour of Australia later this year will be Ravi Shastri’s last chance to coach the national team to a Test series triumph outside Asia.
