ICC has shared the updated version of DLS which will be effective from September 30.

DLS method is used in limited-over games affected by rain | GETTY

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has come up with modification in the famous Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) system. The DLS method is used to find out the target score for the team batting second in limited-overs cricket when the game gets an interruption by rain.

The updated version of DLS will come into effect from the 30th September when Zimbabwe take on South Africa at Kimberly.

As per the update, the international cricket body has taken the modification in the game in consideration. This decision involved analysis which took into account 428  T20Is and 700 ODIs which comprise about 2,40,000 deliveries.

Teams have started looking for a big score and that plays a big role in setting a par score. The analysis has taken it as a major factor behind the Council's decision. The boost in par score calculations has also take into account a team's propensity to score big during the last few overs of the innings which was deemed necessary by the players.

The variations in the ICC's code of conduct which were approved on July 2 will similarly be implemented from September 30th as well. Audible obscenity and personal abuse have been introduced as new offenses commanding a level-1 degree of punishment. The Council has also cracked the whip with regard to ball-tampering with any attempt to tamper with the ball leading to a minimum ban of 12 ODIs or 6 tests.

DLS has been a controversial method in cricket even though it is considered as one of the most accurate methods.

During Indian Premier League 2018, Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Dinesh Karthik had questioned the DLS method. He wanted the current rain-rule method to be replaced by Jaydevan (VJD) method.

He was disappointed after a game against Kings XI Punjab where targets were reduced to run-a-ball after rain. Earlier they needed 8-runs per over.
