Usman Khawaja not bothered by "perceptions" over his spin troubles and record in Asia

My focus has always been about performing towards the team's cause, says Khawaja.

Australian batsman Usman Khawaja is really not bothered about talks concerning his ability to play spin, and especially his record in Asian conditions, saying his main goal is to help national side to win games.

Khawaja has featured in 33 Tests so far and amassed in excess of 2000 runs at an average since making Test debut in 2011 for Australia, which is decent numbers, but his record against spin and at Asian conditions raised questions over his place in the Test squad, as the batsman has scored only 242 runs in 10 innings at an average of 14.62 with no fifty-plus scores, which give bullets to his critics.

In his 53 dismissals in Tests, Usman has been dismissed 21 times at an average of 35.38 per dismissal by the slower bowlers which raised questions over his ability to play spin.

However, the 31-year-old doesn’t want to pay much attention to outside bubbles and hoping to play a key role for Australians in the upcoming Test series against Pakistan in the UAE next month.

Khawaja told cricket.com.au on Thursday (September 27), “They're all perceptions; they're all that people may think. That's the reason I don't bother paying too much attention what happens outside this little bubble. I've got a lot of team-mates around me, we're all looking after each other, the coaches are around here to support you. I'm really enjoying playing cricket; it doesn't matter where I'm playing it.”

He signed off by saying, “The number one goal is trying to do whatever I can to help my team win, whether that's a hard knock of 30 off 200 balls in the second innings, or a big hundred in the first innings. I try to go about my cricket that way now, I don't worry about the rest. I'm not here to do anything else other than trying to help Australian win cricket games.”
