Craig Overton and Marcus Trescothick came together to pull off an extraordinary bowler-fielder hat-trick for Somerset against Nottinghamshire on Wednesday (September 26). The hat-trick was so unique that the like of which had not been witnessed for more than hundred years.

Overton claimed the hat-trick just a day after Somerset captain Tom Abell had achieved the same feat. The most remarkable aspect about Overton’s hat-trick was that Trescothick took catches of all the three dismissed batsmen.

Left-hander Ben Slater fell for 49 when he edged the ninth ball of the day to Trescothick at second slip. The next two deliveries produced near identical dismissals, with right-handers Samit Patel and Riki Wessels nicking into Trescothick’s safe hands.

The last time such an event had taken place in England was way back in 1914, when George Thompson of Northamptonshire involved in three consecutive dismissals off as many balls.

Coming to the match, Somerset registered an innings and 146 runs victory over Nottinghamshire. Opting to bat, Somerset rode on James Hildreth’s 137 to put 463 on the board in the first innings. Subsequently, the Somerset bowlers did their bit and bundled out Nottinghamshire for 133 and 184 in the first and second innings respectively. Overton was the stand-out bowler for Somerset, claiming seven wickets across two innings.
