Ignored from the Test squad for the series against Pakistan, Peter Handscomb is ready to play the waiting game for a recall into the side.

Handscomb struggled for form during Australia A's tour of India last month – a measured 56 in his last trip to the crease was his only double-figure score from six innings – and duly missed out on selection for Australia's upcoming two-Test series in the UAE.

However, he scored a stylish 89 for Victoria in their JLT Cup clash against New South Wales at North Sydney Oval on Sunday.

"I was struggling a lot with the swinging ball and the seaming ball as most batters do and I just wanted to find someone...like Chris Rogers who made a lot of runs in England and with a different technique," Handscomb said to Cricket Australia.

"We have done some real good work and hopefully now that the season has started all that hard work can pay off."

Handscomb said Rogers had taught him plenty over the last few months and it was now up to him to incorporate those changes when out in the middle for his state and his country.

"Playing the ball later comes from your alignment," he revealed.

"He (Rogers) noticed I was squaring up a little and that had come from playing a couple of tours in the subcontinent and then in Australia when I am mainly facing a ball swinging in to me.

"Then when the ball started to swing away I wasn’t in a very good position to combat that.

"He got me straightening up, making sure my front elbow and my shoulder lead the shot and then everything else will follow."

Handscomb will be in action in the JLT Cup on Wednesday, with Victoria returning to the Junction Oval in Melbourne for the first domestic one-day contest at the venue since 2005 when they take on Western Australia.
